The State of Texas Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Tylenol Makers Concerning Autism Spectrum Claims

Courtroom Case
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for the United States Senate, alleged the drug companies of concealing potential dangers of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the manufacturers of acetaminophen, alleging the corporations hid safety concerns that the pain reliever posed to pediatric cognitive development.

The court filing arrives a month after Donald Trump promoted an unsubstantiated connection between consuming acetaminophen - referred to as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism in children.

The attorney general is taking legal action against J&J, which formerly manufactured the drug, the sole analgesic approved for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a declaration, he stated they "misled consumers by making money from discomfort and marketing drugs without regard for the potential hazards."

Kenvue says there is insufficient reliable data tying acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies lied for decades, intentionally threatening countless individuals to boost earnings," Paxton, a Republican, said.

Kenvue commented that it was "deeply concerned by the perpetuation of misinformation on the safety of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the welfare of women and children in America."

On its website, Kenvue also mentioned it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that indicates a verified association between consuming paracetamol and autism."

Groups representing medical professionals and medical practitioners share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated acetaminophen - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to address pain and elevated temperature, which can pose significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In over twenty years of studies on the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the consumption of acetaminophen in any period of pregnancy results in brain development issues in offspring," the association commented.

The court filing cites current declarations from the previous government in asserting the drug is reportedly hazardous.

Last month, the former president raised alarms from public health officials when he instructed pregnant women to "struggle intensely" not to consume acetaminophen when unwell.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that physicians should think about restricting the usage of acetaminophen, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism in minors has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who supervises the FDA, had pledged in spring to initiate "comprehensive study program" that would determine the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a matter of months.

But authorities cautioned that finding a sole reason of autism - considered by experts to be the result of a complex mix of inherited and surrounding conditions - would not be simple.

Autism is a type of permanent neurological difference and impairment that affects how persons experience and engage with the world, and is identified using medical professional evaluations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - aligned with the former president who is seeking US Senate - asserts the manufacturer and J&J "deliberately disregarded and sought to suppress the research" around acetaminophen and autism.

The case aims to force the corporations "destroy any marketing or advertising" that claims Tylenol is reliable for expectant mothers.

The court case mirrors the concerns of a assembly of mothers and fathers of minors with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

A federal judge rejected the lawsuit, stating investigations from the parents' expert witnesses was inconclusive.
