A senior Russian general has been fatally wounded following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The attack took place on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
The committee stated that one possible explanation points to the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Site of the Blast
Officials have been sent to the location, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the city.
Accounts suggest the blast took place in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.
Series of Incidents
Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This most recent event comes after other notable incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of policy.
The war has increasingly seen shadowy operations moving into the center of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
