Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the Giants. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
- Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his coach.
