Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers stated in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have participated, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their advancement".

Summers, who once led the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released messages demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted his determination to resign.

"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Political Context

This development comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on recently to endorse a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will then head to the administration of President Trump for approval. The President has said he plans to sign the measure, after reversing his position on the matter following pressure from his base.

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The communications showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the academic to influential global figures.

Individual Statement

After the emails were shared with the wider community, the former official said he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to rebuild confidence and fix connections with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied senior posts under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public duties recently on this week, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in Washington where he was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was no longer associated with the group.

Summers joined the board of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO the company leader.
