Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An recent acronym emerged several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a child who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it disavows all charges it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
