Democrats Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials expressed anger after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in defense or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all took an oath to defend and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that violate the law or our national charter."
The Former President's Incensed Response
The clip appeared to prompt a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he stated: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership issued a unified statement denouncing the comments.
"Political violence has no role in America," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our United States with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical online messages and withdraw his violent language before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.
Representatives' Defiant Answer
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this United States and swore an oath to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No warning, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "Every American must join forces and denounce the former president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is requesting the death of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and determine all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a video message to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
