Chelsea's Manager Enzo Maresca Calls Lead-Up Time as The 'Most Difficult Two Days' at the Blues
Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.
The 44-year-old delivered a puzzling comment in his post-match media briefing even after notching a 2-0 win at home through strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points sent Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to consecutive matches.
Yet, when asked about the full-back's contribution and general display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his displeasure over the previous two days within the club.
"The way the lads are eager to develop has been superb and this is the reason why I praise them - because with so many challenges, they are performing admirably after a complicated week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the most difficult because several people failed to back us."
Pressed on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City boss elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I love the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."
Fitness & Suspension Crisis
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's ongoing injury and suspension issues, remarking they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I truly commend the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to appreciate because the work from the players is outstanding."
Chelsea's success over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come next week.
Speculation Over Maresca's Remark
It was unclear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea manager.
In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, held a training session at Cobham, faced a pre-game press briefing where he appeared at ease, and engineered a win over an in-form Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an issue related to the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
