Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others were hurt in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died served in the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was found not long after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location revealed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister said.

Those injured by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the explosion had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
